What is a dental implant?
A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. A small titanium post is placed into the jawbone, the bone grows around it over the following months, and a crown is then fitted on top.
That is the part which makes it different from a bridge. A bridge borrows support from the teeth on either side, which have to be reduced in size to carry it. An implant stands on its own and leaves the neighbouring teeth untouched.
In short: an implant is the option that replaces a missing tooth without altering the healthy teeth around it.

What the treatment involves
An implant is not a single appointment. It runs in stages, and the waiting between them is the part worth understanding before you start.
Examination and imaging
We check the site, the bone available and the surrounding teeth, and take the imaging needed to plan where the implant can sit.
Placing the implant
The post is placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic. Most people describe it as more straightforward than they expected.
Healing
The bone fuses to the implant. This stage takes months rather than weeks, and it cannot be shortened.
Fitting the crown
Once the implant is stable, impressions are taken and the final crown is made and fitted.
How long does it take overall? Longer than most people assume. Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust puts healing in the bone at three to six months, with total treatment commonly running six to twelve months. We will give you a timeline for your own case at the examination.

Often a good fit when
- The teeth either side of the gap are healthy and you would rather not have them reduced.
- You have enough bone at the site, or it can be built up.
- Your gums are healthy and kept that way.
- You are comfortable with treatment that runs over several months.
Worth discussing first if
- You smoke. It measurably affects how implants heal, and we will talk about it honestly.
- You have diabetes that is not well controlled, or take medication affecting bone.
- You need the gap resolved quickly. A bridge finishes far sooner.
- Active gum disease needs treating before any implant is considered.
None of these rules anyone out on its own. They are the things we would want to look at before recommending one course over another.
